How a passion for solving spatial challenges became a career helping others
Marcus Wong’s passion for interior design started during his studies at the Hong Kong Design Institute. He wasn’t interested in sprawling mansions or unlimited budgets — he was fascinated by the real challenge. How do you create beautiful, functional spaces when you’re working with 120 square feet? That question drove everything he learned.
After graduating in 2008, he apprenticed with established design firms in Central. But his real education came from working directly with homeowners in the New Territories. He learned what actually matters when you’re living in a compact urban apartment. It’s not about trends or showiness. It’s about making your home work for your life.
Everything changed in 2015. Marcus completed a comprehensive redesign of a 120 square foot Tuen Mun bathroom that earned recognition from local design publications. But here’s what mattered more than the recognition — the client actually used the space. It wasn’t a showpiece. It was a bathroom that worked.
That project became his signature approach. Combine aesthetic appeal with practical ergonomics and sustainable material selection. Respect the constraints. Don’t fight against Hong Kong’s residential landscape — design within it, and make it better.
By 2019, Marcus had completed over 400 renovation projects. Homeowners and junior designers kept asking him the same questions. How do you plan a kitchen renovation? What’s the real cost of a mistake? How do you know if a designer’s actually listening to you?
He joined Tuen Design Studio Limited to formalize what he’d learned. Now he develops and delivers practical training programs that demystify the renovation process. His teaching philosophy is straightforward: thoughtful design isn’t about spending more money. It’s about spending it wisely. It’s about understanding your space, your needs, and your constraints before making any decisions.
Marcus holds a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design from the Hong Kong Design Institute and completed advanced studies in Kitchen & Bathroom Planning at the International Kitchen & Bath Association. But his real credentials are the kitchens and bathrooms that actually work. The clients who genuinely use their renovated spaces. The junior designers he’s trained who’ve gone on to develop their own successful practices.
He’s driven by honest communication. He’ll tell you when a design idea won’t work in your space. He’ll explain why a slightly different approach will serve you better. And he’ll help you understand that renovation planning isn’t something to fear — it’s something you can actually master with the right guidance.
